Why 70s & 80s Kids Rule: The Ultimate Guide | Karen Morgan
Welcome y’all!
This clip is from the live taping of my new album, “Shiny Happy People Laughing,” recorded in my home town of Athens, Georgia. You may have seen some of this material on video, but it has never been recorded for an audio album. I am excited to give you a sneak peek!
***** I do all of my own social media posts and video editing while touring for shows, so I would be SO grateful if you could LIKE, SUBSCRIBE & SHARE with your friends. Thank you!!
My channel & my comedy are all about laughing at life. Hit subscribe to keep the fun going! Here you will find standup comedy, storytelling, voiceovers, and random stuff that makes me laugh. My comedy material is about parenting, marriage, relationships, family, aging "gracefully" and the humor of everyday life. I'm also a Southern girl who married a Yankee and moved to Maine, so you will probably see stuff about how cold I am and how much I miss the Waffle House. I work as a clean comic on stage, so I try to do the same with my channel.
I was raised in the 1970s and went to school in the 1980s, so expect some humorous nostalgic trips to the past for Over 50 Gen X, Gen Jones and Baby Boomers. And because I am a very proud alum of the University of Georgia who was born and raised in Athens, you will definitely see some videos about the Georgia Bulldogs (Go Dawgs!).
Cheers!
Karen

Love you! So true about growing up in the seventies! Thank you so much. The way the big pink dodgeball smelled when hit you in the face. Shake it off, 5 yr old girl. We were OK. Everybody gets hit in the face somehow; Everyone gets bruises, shake it off. Sports are not always totally safe and you might not win! Have some necklace candy, play outside and be happy. Ride bikes, no helmets, if you climb a tree and fall, then be embarrassed and Climb better next time. There are no grown ups here, they’re busy. They are grown ups on their own; you be a kid in your own. Come home when the street lights come on. Gen X, take personal responsibility for yourself and suck it up. Yep but it was so free and so fun as well!

She’s right, at 12 years old, I washed my own clothes, made my own meals, no one ever told me to do homework, but I did it. I’d come home everyday after school and my sister and I would be home by ourselves until 9:00 pm when our dad got home, and 10:30 pm mom would get home. In the summer I’d go weeks without seeing my parents. I’d call from a friend’s house asking to stay the night and go from friend to friend It was a great time. I was 14, sister was 15 and our parents went in vacation for two weeks and left us at home. It was a crazy time to be a kid.

Also the worst parents of their own children at that time. All the “helicopter” crap began with the X’ers as parents. And looked how splendidly successful that offspring ended up.

Gen X right here. Born in late 60’s. Had first job at age 10 (paper route), rode my bike everywhere, walked to school on occasion never complained, kept my room cleaned. Did what my parents told me to do and I did good in school. Stayed hard-working and I never took anything for granted I knew things were not for free. Didn’t have cell phones at the time, did not need them. We had made actual phone calls to friends.

Every kid in my neighborhood in the 70's got shot with a BB or pellet gun. You could fully expect it. We were all raised outside like feral kids. Remember the public service announcement "Do you know where your children are". ?

I've never heard about genX! In 74, I started my first job at 15yrs old working at a cotton mill making jean material for Levi's/plus; brought home $75. less than my last job in 2017! Those were the days! There weren't so much popularity and applause then, it was all about survival... as today nobody wants to work anymore!!!

This was my life-except the cigarettes. We also would dive in the dumpsters for cans to recycle to get money. My brother and I took turns being the lookout vs the diver. 😂. We were definitely told to “go outside and play and don’t come back til lunch.” We rode our bikes (no helmets) to the library, then would stop at the “Toot & Totum (Texas) for a Big Gulp. Then we rode home with our books in one hand and 32 oz of pure sugar in the other !

Born in 71 and learn how to drive when I was 4. Sat on my dad's lap, of course no seatbelts, steered while he had a Marlboro in one hand and a Budweiser in the other. I have no idea how I'm still breathing.

Ate raw veggies from our garden, drank from hose...sometimes went to pick up bittles from the ditches in our neighborhood with friends and walk together a quarter mile to get 50 cents and split a bag if chips and a 10 cent crappy soda like no name grape soda. Broke up dogfights, no lease laws, lucky we didn't end up in the ER but our folks would just have treated it at home with hydrogen peroxide, meruachrome and bandaid. St Joseph's aspirin maybe.

I love her Gen X shtick. Finally someone is speaking up for us overlooked, poor little latch-key, forgotten kids!!!! Instead of "rub some dirt on it" I always got "take an aspirin." "Ma, my appendix just burst." "Take an aspirin. You're going to school!" BTW-even scarier than Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka was that dude in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang who stole children. I'm in my 50s and I'm still traumatized. I was just telling a Gen Z'er today about the terrible days before TV remote controls when you got in fights over who was going to get up to change the channel, or fix the vertical hold on the TV by jumping up and down in front of it, or banging the top or the side of the set with your fist. When those didn't work you felt around back for that little vertical hold knob, but you could never quite see the screen while turning the knob so you needed an assist to tell you when the picture had stopped rolling....
